If you live in the UK then you’ll know exactly how cold and grey the winter season can be. If you like to spend the coldest, darkest parts of the UK winter abroad, the chances are you prefer warm, sunny destinations where you can forget about the sleet and wind back home. The very best winter sun destinations are known for their mild climates, more than average annual hours of sunshine, and a good range of attractions for every kind of traveller.

Whether you are looking for a family friendly break, a romantic holiday for two, or are looking to fly solo, you will be spoiled for choice when it comes to choosing the perfect winter sun holiday. From self catering coastal apartments to resort trips and luxury breaks, you can find all kinds of trips to suit your pace and budget. These are some of our absolute favourite destinations to top up our vitamin D and warm our bones in the winter.

Fuerteventura, Canary Islands

The second largest of the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura is closer to Africa than it is to Europe and so it boasts some of the most pleasant winter time temperatures for a European holiday. Here you’ll find white sandy beaches, beautiful coves and dramatic cliffs. The climate is warm, though it is cooled by ocean breezes that keep things fresh and comfortable. Resorts dot the island, and it is extremely popular among surfers, water skiers and wind surfers. You can also find some great scuba diving spots in the surrounding area.

Funchal, Madeira

Located relatively close to the Canary Islands, Madeira has a gorgeous subtropical climate that makes exploring this stunning island a joy in any season. Winter temperatures are on the cooler side, but tend to remain in the high teens which makes for balmy days and pleasantly cool nights.

Unlike Fuerteventura, Madeira has black volcanic sand beaches that make for some dramatic holiday photos. Funchal, the capital of the autonomous Portuguese region, is known for its picturesque harbour and botanical gardens. Visit for New Year’s Eve and you’ll be treated to a thrilling fireworks display.

Dubai, UAE

With scorching summer temperatures that tip the mercury at 40 degrees Celsius, Dubai is on many people’s bucket lists even though a lot of potential visitors are put off by the idea of all that heat. If this is a concern of yours then you should consider visiting this desert paradise in the winter. Winter temperatures in Dubai are balmy and comfortable, with 19 degrees being the average. Leave your car at the car park in Liverpool Airport and catch your flight to this sandy playground this winter.

Cape Town, South Africa

A modern metropolis with a fascinating and often fraught history, Cape Town today is one of the best holiday destinations for winter sun seekers. One of the best things about visiting Cape Town from the UK is that we have a time zone in common, so despite the distance you won’t have to deal with any jet lag. There are so many things to see and do in Cape Town that every traveller will find something to entertain, inspire, and enrich themselves.

The Republic of Maldives

Usually known as simply the Maldives, this archipelagic state is located in the Indian Ocean, southwest of Sri Lanka and India. Its equatorial location gives it a warm, sunny climate all year round and it is home to a huge range of boutique hotels and resorts. The islands and atolls of the Maldives are most people’s idea of paradise, with white sandy beaches that stud the Indian Ocean like a string of pearls, and palm tree topped atolls that remain sun drenched even when the weather back home is cold and grim.

Miami, USA

Florida is called the Sunshine State for a reason, and Miami is a perfect representation of the state’s hot, sunny climate. Miami has long been one of the biggest tourist destinations in the USA and is just as popular now as it was in the 80s and 90s. This colourful, vibrant place is perfect for getting some winter sun, as well as trying out some boating or snorkelling. If you prefer cultural experiences, you will find the area is a melting pot of different cultures, flavours, styles and attitudes.
