TO GAIN RECOGNITION
Being fascinated with the sparkling beauty of the diamonds, the majority of the people had forgotten that gemstones initially were brought to life for industrial purposes. Yet, it is a real and important fact that could not be ignored when speaking about the lasting market confrontation "natural vs unnatural diamonds". Although the latest changes we are going to highlight are marked by the desired recognition of "synthetische diamanten" or man-made diamonds, stepping back to history allows us to see the absurdity of the long and hot debates.
Initially scientifically approved
So, we know that one should say “thanks” for the luxury jewelry to the scientists who lured the diamonds out of the shadow. There is no need to speak about the first mined diamond but the story of the origin of man-made alternative deserves attention. If talking more precisely we are interested in highlighting the reasoning behind the idea of creating artificial analog. Just being guided by the logic one can guess that being acknowledged about unique chemical properties of natural material, scientists could come up with such thought to get the so-called upgraded version. And this logic is indeed right. The first synthetic diamond was produced by General Electric (GE) for the need of the tech industry as the alternative to natural diamonds that overcomes it with conductivity level.
Approved but challenged
Later, many other professionals in many industries tested all the qualities of lab-grown diamonds such as hardness, durability, optical potential. In many areas, a new product appeared to be better to apply than natural gemstone since laboratory settings enabled scientists to work with weaknesses, improve and adjust them to the diverse industrial needs. Moreover, using lab-grown diamonds not only promoted innovations but also reduced the costs of production.
Although man-made diamonds appeared as an initially scientifically approved upgraded version of natural gemstones, they were met with severe hostility on the jewelry market. Paradoxically but they were called fake and should handle the long battle for recognition.
Winning steps
The First win came near 80th when the laboratory started using the 4Cs system to evaluate the properties of grown diamonds. This system is used for evaluating natural diamonds, so this step was incredibly important.
The next win occurred recently - two decades after the first one. In December 2020 GIA officially announced about using the same color and clarity grading system used for natural diamonds to grade man-made pieces. MadeSones’ management shared their happiness of this news calling it a great win since it is for the first time man-made diamonds were recognized as diamonds, different from the mined gemstones but true diamonds.
