Shenae Grimes-Beech Recalls 'Nightmare' She Had Before Her First Day on the Degrassi Set (Exclusive)
Booking Degrassi: The Next Generation was a dream come true for Shenae Grimes-Beech.
Growing up in Canada, the long-running franchise had a big impact on the young starlet's desire to get into the business.
“I had always wanted to be on Degrassi,” she tells PEOPLE exclusively. “That was kind of why I got into acting in the first place — just seeing these kids on television and being like, ‘Whoa, that's a thing. That's a possibility. These kids are from the city I'm from, and they're doing it, and they're my age.’ So to have an opportunity like that was obviously super surreal for me.”
Grimes-Beech was 14 when she auditioned for the role of Darcy Edwards, and remembers the nervousness she felt stepping on to set for the first day after years of watching the show.

“I remember the night before going to set for the first time, I had a nightmare, as far as I'm concerned, where I got to the Degrassi set and was accidentally calling everybody by their character names. And I woke up sweating," she remembers with a laugh. "I was so petrified that I was going to just completely embarrass myself and only refer to Shane [Kippel] as Spinner and Cassie [Steele] as Manny, and they would be like, ‘Who is this girl that they let onto our set?’ So I remember that very vividly.”
Years after that first Degrassi audition, Grimes-Beech, now 34, says she's honored that her character resonated with so many people, and to his day receives messages from fans who felt connected to Darcy.
