#017 The Call of the Wild 2020-12-2
Buck did not read the newspapers, or he would have known that trouble was coming; not just for himself, but for every dog with strong muscles and warm long hair from Canada to California. Because men, searching in the Arctic Darkness, had found a yellow metal, thousands of men were rushing into the Northland. These men wanted dogs, and furry coats to protect them from the cold.
Buck lived at a big house in a sun-kissed California valley. Judge Miller's place, it was called. It stood back from the road, half-hidden among the trees, and it was huge. There were long, winding driveways, small houses for servants, green fields, and a well.
And over this. Buck ruled. Here he was born, and here he had lived the four years of his life. It was true, there were other dogs, but they did not count. Some lived in the crowded kennels, others led mysterious lives in the house — strange creatures that rarely put a nose out of doors or set foot to ground.
