The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) has revealed its 2024 Christmas Stamps, featuring a breathtaking depiction of Simbang Gabi sa Ilog Pasig (Christmas Dawn Masses along Pasig River).

World’s Longest Stamp Celebrates Filipino Tradition

Measuring 234mm in length, the stamp is a stunning work of art created by Gelo Andres of Renacimiento Manila. It honors the cherished Filipino tradition of Simbang Gabi, a series of dawn Masses leading up to Christmas. The design showcases iconic churches along the historic Pasig River, including Binondo Church, Quiapo Church, Manila Cathedral, Sta. Ana Church, San Felipe Neri Church, San Pedro Makati Church, Guadalupe Church, Pasig Church, and Antipolo Church.

Key Figures at the Unveiling Ceremony

PHLPost Postmaster General Luis D. Carlos and Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna led the ceremonial unveiling, joined by other government officials. This event was timed with the City of Manila’s Christmas Lighting Ceremony, making it a highlight of the holiday season.

Raising Awareness for the Pasig River’s Historical Significance

This world-record-breaking stamp aims to raise awareness of the Pasig River’s cultural and historical importance. The river, which is currently undergoing rehabilitation, is being transformed into a public Esplanade and Promenade Park. The stamp serves as a reminder of the historical landmarks that line the river, highlighting the shared heritage of the Filipino people.

A Beautiful Tribute to Faith and Hope

Each stamp features intricate designs and special embellishments. The image includes a four-color process with blue iridescent ink on the river and suprametal-multilevel embossing on the churches. PHLPost’s Postmaster General Luis D. Carlos emphasized that the stamp is more than just a celebration of Filipino heritage; it invites people to reflect on the shared values of unity and devotion during the Christmas season.

As Carlos said, “As the vibrant hues of dawn light up the Pasig River and its surroundings, so does this stamp illuminate the essence of Christmas: Love, Joy, Peace, and Hope.”

The Pasig River’s Historical Role in Filipino Culture

The Pasig River has long played a significant role in the country’s history, serving as a major waterway during the Spanish colonial era. It connected Manila Bay to Laguna de Bay, facilitating trade and transportation. The iconic Manila Central Post Office, which is currently undergoing renovations, was strategically built along the river to facilitate mail delivery via water transport. The river remains a symbol of Filipino culture and history.

Promoting Stamp Collecting and the Art of Letter Writing

PHLPost recently celebrated National Stamp Collecting Month, encouraging stamp collectors to showcase their collections and promote the hobby, especially among the youth. The goal is to revive the tradition of letter writing, which remains an important part of communication in the digital age.

This 2024 Christmas stamp is not just a record-breaking piece of art; it’s a celebration of Filipino faith, culture, and the Christmas spirit.
