Owned by ByteDance, TikTok has announced a global workforce reduction. While the company didn’t disclose specific figures by country, fewer than 500 jobs in Malaysia are expected to be impacted by this move.

A TikTok spokesperson confirmed that the job cuts are part of the company’s strategy to enhance content moderation. In 2024 alone, TikTok plans to invest $2 billion globally in trust and safety efforts. With 80% of harmful content now being removed by automated systems, the company continues to reduce its reliance on human moderators.

Workforce Restructuring at TikTok

The layoffs follow months of speculation about the company’s plan to streamline its operations and reduce its global workforce. ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, employs over 110,000 people across more than 200 cities worldwide.

Malaysia’s Regulatory Crackdown

The job cuts also come as tech giants, including TikTok, face increased regulatory pressure in Malaysia. The government has imposed stricter rules on social media platforms following a surge in malicious content earlier this year. Authorities have asked these platforms to apply for operating licenses to combat rising cybercrime, including online fraud, child exploitation, and cyberbullying.
