Air purifier vs humidifier, which one do we need?

Air purifier vs humidifier, which one do we need?

When it comes to ensuring the well-being of a baby, it is important to know that there are a large number of environmental factors to consider. Among these environmental factors, ensuring that you breathe perfectly clean air is a top priority. Air purifiers and humidifiers are devices that have a huge impact on the quality of the air you breathe. However, it is important to know that these devices serve different purposes with their unique features.

What is an air purifier?

An air purifier is a tool that purifies the air and rids it of the various pollutants it contains. These pollutants can cause discomfort and illness for some people. When installed in a home, the air purifier is mainly used to destroy polluting particles in order to clean the air in the house. One of the advantages of the air purifier is that it is useful regardless of the environment in which it is installed. If your purifier is installed in a very polluted environment, the device detects the concentration of polluting particles in the air in order to adapt its mode of operation. In other words, the more polluted the environment, the faster the device works to clean the air.

What is an air humidifier?

As the name suggests, the air humidifier is a device that is used to humidify the air in a room. Air humidifiers are particularly used during the winter period. Indeed, during the winter, the humidity level drops considerably due to the drop in temperature. In order to combat the negative temperatures, most homes use a heating system. Even if it warms the interior, the heating also has the effect of drying the surrounding air. This drying of the air is very problematic because it promotes the appearance of certain respiratory diseases. Babies are particularly sensitive to this phenomenon.

What is the difference between an air purifier and an air humidifier?

it is clear that air purifiers and humidifiers are devices whose purpose is to clean the air. However, the resemblance between the two devices ends there since they have a very different modes of operation.

The main role of the air purifier is to remove chemical or microbiological pollutants that are present in the air. Air purifiers consist of two elements which are: the fan and the filter surface. Depending on the filtration technology used, the performance of the air purifier may vary. In most purifiers, ambient air passes through the unit. During this passage, the pollutants contained in the air are trapped by the filter, which allows clean air to be then returned to the room. Unlike the humidifier, the air purifier does not add anything to the air it returns to the room.

As far as the air humidifier is concerned, its role is simply to add water to the surrounding air. The humidifier does not clean the air. It boils water which it then turns into steam which is released into the air. To do this, humidifiers use several technologies. Ultrasonic technology allows the humidifier to turn water into vapor by vibrating water droplets. It should be noted in the case of ultrasonic humidifiers that it is advisable to use distilled water rather than tap water to operate the device. It is believed that tap water contains mineral particles that can be introduced into the air during the operation of the humidifier. The effects of these mineral particles are not well known, but some research suggests that these particles may have effects on lung tissue.

Asthma and allergies

Allergy sufferers know that allergens are carried by particles floating in the air. These particles are often so tiny that they can remain suspended in the air for several hours. To limit the risk of exposure to these allergens, many people use air purifiers. Depending on the type of air purifier for dust and allergies, it is possible to effectively remove mold spores, dust mites, pollen as well as pet dander.

Air humidifiers, on the other hand, have the potential to help people who suffer from problems with dry or irritated nasal passages. Humidifiers are not designed to reduce allergen levels in the air. However, if not properly cleaned, a humidifier can introduce mold into the air; which can cause allergies in sensitive people.

Colds, flu and respiratory irritation

Thanks to an effective filtration system, it is possible for an air purifier to capture certain virus-carrying particles. However, some viruses easily pass through ordinary filtration systems. Even though the use of an air purifier has no impact on a cold or the flu, the device is able to eliminate many irritating particles that are in the air. It is thus possible to relieve the symptoms of certain patients.

Regarding the effects of humidifiers, they are able to help relieve the discomfort caused by a stuffy nose, the flu or a cold. In addition, living in an environment with a good level of humidity is an advantage against viruses. It is estimated that with a humidity level of between 40 and 60%, it is possible to reduce the infectiousness of certain viruses.

Should we buy an air purifier or an air humidifier?

Based on the characteristics of the different devices, it should be noted that the choice between a purifier and a humidifier depends above all on your needs. If you feel the air in your home is too dry, a humidifier is a must. This will be useful to relieve sensitive people and infants. However, the air humidifier is used almost exclusively in winter, which makes it a niche device. The air purifier can be used throughout the year since it effectively cleans the air. While it is true that the two devices do not have the same function, know that nothing prevents you from using them simultaneously. In addition, be aware that there are now 2-in-1 devices. These devices offer the possibility of using the purification function and the humidification function separately or simultaneously.
