Climate change will cause seawater intrusion in the Mekong Delta to be irreversible after 2050

Rising salinity in the Mekong delta is caused by upstream dam construction and downstream sand mining, but climate change could be the dominant factor by 2050, a new study shows. The Mekong Delta is a major agricultural region and increasingly frequent seawater inflows are destroying swathes of crops. Before climate change makes it a global issue, regional stakeholders need to address the anthropogenic component of delta water intrusion.
