[Recommended Book List for March - True: Break Your Intuition Bias]
This is a book for training "critical thinking". We are very accustomed to using our common sense, cognition to understand or explain a thing, and that what we say has a high chance of being right.
However, have you ever thought that perhaps a large part of our common sense is actually wrong?
In the book of truth, readers are asked 13 questions at the beginning to test the extent of our understanding of the world (common sense), such as the proportion of the world's poor population, the proportion of female education, the average life expectancy and so on. These seemingly simple questions yield amazing results:
Nearly 12,000 people from 14 countries answered the question. They only answered 2 questions correctly in the first 12 questions, and no one answered them all correctly. Among them, there are many highly educated groups, such as doctors, engineers, professors and so on. Such a correct answer rate is even lower than letting the gorilla guess the answer at random.
This result shows that people are ignorant of many basic common sense, but most people believe that they have enough common sense. The author mentions that because of media rendering, people often receive exaggerated biased facts and build up false intuitions over time.
In fact, it is quite scary. When looking at problems and things based on our wrong common sense, we are like workers who build 101 on a construction site without a good foundation.
[Problems to be solved in the book]
So the author Hans. Roslyn (clinician, data scientist, global public health professor and world-class public educator) mentioned 10 common cognitive biases in this book, including fear type, negative intuition bias, etc., through statistical charts, Data support allows us to re-understand the world and establish correct cognition and common sense.
The book's preface reads as follows:
"So, if you want to be right and don't want to continue living in a bubble you built; if you're willing to change your worldview; if you want to replace gut reactions with critical thinking; if you're humble and curious, get ready for a blowout —Then please read it carefully.”
I myself like to read books that challenge my own point of view, and I am usually very willing to accept other people's opinions that are contrary to mine and discuss with each other, so as to grow up with each other. "True" is a book I recommend to everyone!
