Embody national traditions with a unified style

Landscape architect and university lecturer Nicholas Bonner visited North Korea in 1993. He also founded a travel company with a friend, specializing in Pyongyang tours, and even made a movie in North Korea.

While working on a number of projects, Nicholas Bonner also began collecting North Korean graphic designs, culminating in the publication of the "Made in North Korea" illustration collection.

Based on images from everyday life in North Korea, the book presents a variety of North Korean product labels, postcards and other items. The North Korean illustration style is very retro, using traditional patterns, with bright red and pink as the main color. Designers like to use steel engineering to suggest the country's industrial capabilities, while the image of Mount Kumgang represents vitality and health, and pine trees and flying cranes symbolize longevity.
