On January 4, 2007, Nancy Pelosi was sworn in as Speaker of the House.

On January 4, 2007, Democratic U.S. Representative Nancy Pelosi was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives, becoming the first female speaker in U.S. history.

Pelosi served two terms as Speaker of the House from 2007 to 2011 before becoming House Minority Leader as Democrats lost more than half of their seats. Pelosi, 78, was re-elected as Speaker of the House on January 3, 2019, as Democrats took back the House of Representatives in the 2018 U.S. midterm elections. She is also the only female speaker of the U.S. to date.

In addition, out of the 435 seats in the 116th U.S. House of Representatives that took office in 2019, there were 102 female members, 43 of whom were non-white women, all hitting a record high.
