The English special verbs listed below, due to their special usage, need to pay special attention to their respective characteristics:


【Double Object/Assent Verb】 There will be two objects after: direct object and indirect object

A] give to / write a letter / bring to / tell tell / leave to leave (use to for the preposition)

B] buy / make / cook / sing (for preposition)

C] send / get / leave / *ask to ask someone.. (prepositions use to and for)

A] Give me the money.

※ me is an indirect adjective, money is a direct adjective

B] He bought her a LV bag.

※ her is an indirect adjective, LV bag is a direct adjective

C] They sent an email to me.

※ an email is the direct receiver, me is the indirect receiver, when writing the direct receiver first, it must be separated from the indirect receiver with the preposition to or for

[Affixed verb] The purpose is to modify the subject, and there is no object after it, and directly add the complement of the subject

A] Speaking status: look looks/smell smells/taste tastes/sound sounds/feel feels/seem seems/appears

B] Speaking becomes: get / become / end up / come / go / grow / turn / fall / run

C] Talk about keeping: keep / remain / stand / lie / stay / rest / prove/ elect / report / arrive


A] You look sexy tonight.

※ look sexy is talking about the subject You

B] We all got crazy at that party.

※ got crazy is the subject We all

C] She keeps fit even at her 60s.

※ keep fit is about the subject She


【Sensory verbs】Related to the five senses and perceptions of human beings, followed by object words and object complements

A] Talk about the five senses: see, watch, look at see/ hear, listen to hear/ smell/ feel

B] Speaking of perception: find finds/notices/detect*


  A] I saw them kissing on the street.

※ kissing is the complement of them

B] We found him a loner.

※ a loner is the complement of him

 

【 causative verb 】 the meaning of the verb itself is ambiguous, and there must be the object and the complement of the object behind

A] Drive to order someone to do.. ( make / have / let ) + object + verb (original)

B] make.. into a state ( make / have / let / get ) + object + verb (past participle)

C] allow to tolerate someone doing.. ( have ) + object + verb (present participle)

D] make something become .. (make makes .. / have to .. how / let make someone feel)

(keep keep .. is / leave makes .. become / call .. is) + object + (form/name)

( name.. for / elect.. for / paint.. for )

※ make and have also have the usage of normal general verbs: make, make/have, eat and drink, hold


A] They made me do this.

※ do this (infinitive phrase) is the complement of me

B] Music makes me happy.

※ happy (adjective) is the complement of me

C] He had me laughing at his jokes.

※ laughing at his jokes (gerund phrases) is the complement of me

D] You make me not myself.

※ not myself (noun phrase) is the complement of me


【Other special verbs】Multiple usages

A] go engage.. / help help.. / have to = need to must

  A] Let's go win the game.

※ go can be followed by the original verb win

B] Could you help take my phone to me?

※ help can be followed by the original verb take

C] We have to call them once we hit the road.
