If your knowledge of sea turtles only stops at "turtles shed tears when they lay eggs", after reading this article, the cold knowledge you can brag to your friends has increased.

I wrote turtles in my graduation thesis. When I read the literature, I hoarded a lot of little knowledge that I thought was cute and shared it with everyone.

By the way, I only have half a month left to hand in my thesis, I hope everything goes well, and now I am working on it!

(I tried to write an article when I didn’t want to continue until halfway through, woohoo, I’m too efficient to be able to rest by typing on the keyboard)

The limbs of turtles are actually very similar to ours.

This is a sea turtle bone specimen. If you count it, you will find that there are five bones in their flippers, the same as our hands and feet.

When watching turtles swim, didn't you realize that there are so many bones in their webs?

In addition to swimming with webbeds in the sea, female turtles also use webbeds to dig sand when they come ashore to lay eggs, mainly using rear webs.

I personally think that the act of scooping sand with your feet really, too, can, love, too.

But remember not to stay behind the turtle when it is digging sand, because sometimes it throws the sand with great force, and there will be small stones/big stones/coral rubble/twigs in the sand. If you hit it, you will be injured/eat sand/eyes.

You won't see male turtles crawling ashore

The ones who will climb ashore are female sea turtles, and they only come to lay their eggs. The sea is their destination. The longer they stay on land, the more danger they will face, because they really crawl slowly on land.

Female sea turtles that climb ashore are actually hunted by animals on land.

Cats eat turtles.

Well, it's actually a jaguar.

expected date of birth

There are 7 species of sea turtles in the world, one of which is called the olive ridley turtle is very special, they come ashore together to lay eggs. This phenomenon is called arribada, which means "to the sea" in Spanish.

Guess how many mothers come to lay eggs in a few nights?

A: 10 - 100 thousand.

It's amazing, but at the moment I don't see a reason why you mother turtles do this.

Maybe when the season comes, they will lay eggs together, and the biological clock of the creatures is also very magical. Spring flowers will bloom, the same reason.

Imagine the days when mothers were swimming near the coast to lay their eggs. The sea must have been very lively.

Humans need sperm banks, but turtles don't

Some species are very specific, such as penguins, they only recognize one partner in their life, and they have no intention of renewing their mates when they die.

But sea turtles are not such a species. It is more important to let the species continue on the earth than to be specific. Therefore, female sea turtles can store sperm in their bodies for up to four years. When the food is sufficient, the environment and other factors are suitable), the eggs will be fertilized, and they will go ashore to lay eggs.

It's not that every father has an exclusive "bank compartment" in the mother's body. It is suspected that everyone's sperm are mixed together, because the baby turtles in a litter have different fathers.

Male turtles generally go up when they see females, and females are very generous, because they are not picky, but at the cost of everyone's sperm getting involved. Doing so is said to increase the survival rate of baby turtles. That's right, if you only recognize one partner, and it happens that the quality of the man is not good, wouldn't it give birth to a litter of "easy-to-die" offspring?

Yin flourishes and Yang declines

The beach can be a "surrogate mother", because after the female sea turtle lays eggs, she goes away, and the rest is up to the fortune.

Beach temperatures can affect the sex of baby turtles. Hotter beaches make more girls, and cooler beaches make more boys.

Although this exam is not taken, but if you don't confuse it and write it down, here is a sentence: hot chick, cool guy.

There is also that perfect temperature that can make 50% of boys and 50% of girls, and that is 29°C.

Nearly 80% of the wild sea turtles discovered by scientists, as well as the newly hatched turtle babies, are female.

The problem of global warming is too serious, the beaches are hot, and all the girls are born.

There is also a solution, that is, to plant more trees on the beach, the trees can cool down, and by the way, help to narrow the ratio of males and females.

Off topic, why am I so obsessed with turtles. (On the one hand, I feel very lucky that my graduation thesis is a topic of interest)

To see sea turtles is to see a miracle. It does not mean that they are endangered, but the chance of them growing into mature sea turtles is really too small, only 0.01%. A mother sea turtle will lay about 100 eggs. We need 10 broods to give birth to a mature sea turtle. It can be said to be one in a thousand. The turtle that survived is really lucky.

They give birth more so they die more, because there are no parents to take care of them. Instead of focusing their energy on caring for their young, parents should increase the number of eggs they lay. The more eggs are laid, the more chances of survival.

How did those turtles die?

I'll talk about it in the next article, let's sell it first.

Turtles only make noise when they are breathing, and are very quiet at other times, and everything takes their time because they can't get up too fast.

When I watched them come ashore to lay eggs, although I was just a bystander, I felt full of relief. How could there be such a chill animal in this world? It's awesome.
