Who is the freshly-baked British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak?
(This article was originally transferred to Twitter , and has been slightly modified since then)
#English Prime Minister fights again
1. Former Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak was "crowned" as leader of the Conservative Party at 9pm Hong Kong time. Later today (Tuesday, 25/10), he will go to Buckingham Palace to meet with King Charles III, where he will be invited to become Prime Minister and Form a government. It is better to talk about the personal background.
2. No interest in talking about "the first Asian Prime Minister of the United Kingdom" and other self-proclaimed propaganda of the Conservative Party: the truth is that Sunak is a "third generation", his parents are professional middle class, he himself entered a private school, and later became a Bankers and "married" into the wealthy.
Not that there is no racism in the UK, but it has a very limited impact in his class. On the contrary, the biggest "discrimination" in Britain today may be discrimination between classes. In this regard, Sunak is (deeply rooted in) the vested interests. His story is not inspirational, just another son of high society climbing to the top of his political career (in fact he is one of the richest MPs/government officials)
3. Compared with many prime ministers in recent years / those who are striving to become prime ministers, his political qualifications can be said to be extremely shallow. ...he was elected MP for the first time in Cameron's second government in 2015 (replacing former Conservative leader William Hague), and looking at the records, this seat has been a safe seat for the Conservative Party since the war. In other words, his political challenge/experience is very weak.
4. His first government position began in January 2018 (Parliamentary Under-secretary), and the following year he was promoted to the second position in the Treasury Department: it was the appointment of Boris Johnson's first prime minister, presumably because Johnson wanted to establish a own power, so exceptionally promoted as Brexiteer and loyal Sunak.
5. After Johnson's 2019 election victory, he reappointed Sajid Javid as treasurer. But soon the two fell out over the appointment of an adviser to the Treasury, Javid was removed/resigned, and Sunak was named Treasurer, less than four years after he was first elected to Congress, a rate of improvement even when external factors were taken into account. Helicopter speed after special factors
6. During the two years as the Minister of Finance, Sunak's reputation is indeed good, but as a "Civil Lord" who distributes a lot of money, who doesn't like it? The real challenge would have been how to recover the economy after the epidemic, and how to plan to repay the national debt borrowed from the epidemic in the medium and long term, but basically Johnson was forced by a series of scandals a few months after the controversial epidemic ended. Step down, his abilities in disguise have not been adequately tested
7. Of course, one can say that his ability was shown in his competition for leader of Liz Truss: but in all fairness, what he said was just common sense, if it wasn't for Liz Truss & friends' ideological brain, it would not be the same. They end up destroying themselves like that. Sunak's so-called accurate judgment points more to Liz Truss' incompetence and idiot than his own foresight
8. In fact, if we judge his own judgment, we can look at two things: at the end of 2021, economists have warned that the economy after the epidemic will experience substantial inflation, and we must be prepared to guard against it, but Johnson and Sunak were both at that time. With a snort, Sunak's judgment and sensitivity are evident.
9. Another controversy about windfall tax. As early as the beginning of 2022, the Labour Party has proposed to levy a one-time windfall tax on energy companies and use it to subsidize the rising energy expenses of the general public. Sunak refused until May, belatedly accepting-
In part, it was reluctant to launch because it wanted to attract media attention to the Johnson Partygate / Sue Gray report.
Moreover, his plan also gives energy companies many ways to avoid tax (such as investing in environmentally friendly construction), reducing government taxes in disguise, and the ability to help the public.
On a macro level, as Chancellor of the Exchequer for the past two years (until July this year) and a member of the Conservative Party in power for the past seven years, Sunak cannot completely decouple from the predicament that the country is facing today; inflation, energy crisis, and public service exhaustion , strikes, etc., are not only problems he will have to deal with, but problems that he is a part of causing.
In other words, it would be naive to see Sunak as a savior
10. Controversy in the party: In addition to the controversies in the party that triggered Johnson's resignation because of his resignation, he has been criticized by some party members as the "tax hike chancellor". In fact, together with his so-called Health and Social Care Levy, and proposed Increase the corporate tax from 19% to 25%, and the tax burden on Britons and businesses is the highest in decades (higher than the Belgian/Bricotta Labour government). This runs counter to the low-tax market-led philosophy that the Conservative Party has always advocated. This made many party members dissatisfied.
(This is the background/far reason why Liz Truss later proposed drastic tax cuts - of course how she executes is not the focus of the discussion here)
11. Finally, the scandal: at the beginning of the year, he revealed that even though he was the British Chancellor of the Exchequer, he actually held a green card (permanent residency) in the United States at the same time, and as the wife of the daughter of a wealthy Indian businessman declared non-domicile status. Pay UK tax. The question is not whether they (they) are evading taxes illegally (should not), but the finance minister, who is in charge of tax policy, is trying to (legally) avoid taxes, which is naturally very bad. Since the scandal broke, Sunak has returned his green card and his wife no longer declares non-dom status. But these scandals are bound to come back into the media spotlight when he becomes prime minister.
Of course, in the case of Partygate, he also received a fixed ticket, of course, his participation was much lower than Johnson's, but after all, it was also a violation of the law, and these will of course be discussed again.
There is so much to talk about for the time being, and I will add more if there is anything. Discussions are welcome.
