As a parent, what are your first words when your child is playing in the rain?
"Children are born scientists, and they will always do things that are, in general, destructive. That's how they explore. If you take something apart and you think about how to put it back together, Back to the status quo, this is what children do. An adult scientist is actually a child who never grew up. This is what adult scientists do."
~Neil deGrasse Tyson, famous American astronomer
When a child goes to get wet in the rain, when a child bangs the dishes and pots at home, when a child plays with eggs, what is the first thing we say as parents?
"Come in! You're going to catch a cold!"
"Stop it! You're noisy and you're going to break the plate!"
"Put it back! You'll break the eggs and stain the floor!"
Tyson is a scientist full of wisdom and an educator who affects the world. In his speech, he mentioned that children's behavior is testing the strength of materials and acoustic experiments. When the eggs fall on the ground, they have experienced a physical experiment and a biological experiment.
They can learn about the material mechanics of eggshells, the biological structure of yolk proteins, and more.
When the yolk comes out, you should say, "Hey, this is going to turn into a chicken one day!"
And when Jae-eun or your child is playing in the rain, you can ask him: "Have you ever thought about where the rain comes from?" Then wait, don't tell them the answer, let them use their imagination first, and then slowly Tell them the answer, orally and through picture books or even scientific readings. Didn’t they learn meteorology?
Children do not have to understand the rain through rigid words and abstract pictures, and then this event must be put on a test to define their achievement. Children just need to stay excited about things and they will naturally want to learn all about it!
"How much does an egg cost you? Twenty cents?"
Experiential education is not without costs and can sometimes be quite disruptive.
If you think the cost of education is too high, then you should try the cost of ignorance
If you think education is expensive, try ignorance!
~Former President of Harvard University, Derek Blog
If a parent asks, "How do I get my child interested in science?"
The answer is: they are born interested in science.
It is very likely that the person who makes them not interested in science or even life is their parents.
The kitchen has never been a dangerous area in our home. They can come and go freely when we are cooking. Jae Hee often drags things on the cabinets to the floor to play with them. In addition to knocking, he sometimes breaks things. The same is true for Jae-en, we let him participate in the kitchen, clearing the dishes, etc., and he also broke a lot of dishes in the process.
But they have also experienced these physical phenomena. They know what sound it will make when hitting the iron pot with a wooden spoon. They can change chopsticks and plates to see what sound they will make. They have learned how to control the handling of bowls and plates to prevent the vegetable juices from spilling.
Of course, you can prevent them from playing with knives, or smashing computers with TVs to see what sounds they make, or even doing things that seriously disturb other people's lives, but let them experience some "low-cost" experiments!
Go get wet in the rain! Go bang! Go and experience it! Go study! Go explore! Go create! Go influence and change the world!
Maybe your child will be an important key to changing the future of mankind, who knows?
Remove the frame and let your children fly!
