What is the relationship between studying a department and employment?

In the market, there seem to be some surveys on the correlation between the degree of study and employment, but I can't find the latest statistics, so I won't cite it. Although my own department and employment are positively related, and the graduation path of my classmates is also concentrated in a few fixed industries.

However, I just recently had a friend who was looking for a job within a year of graduating from college, and I was hesitant about what kind of job I wanted to choose.

They just gave some examples that didn't sound like they had anything to do with what they were learning.

The words "unemployed after graduation" and "unemployed when discharged from the army" came out of their mouths again.

How to understand this situation?
