The sexual fantasy of architects is the nightmare of public buildings!
In several cases of newly established schools that I have reviewed, I often see architects moving the floor units to the left or right like Lego blocks in order to make the façade interesting, ignoring the difficulty of long-term maintenance and management of users in practice. Pan, either forward or backward, to make the schoolhouse look like a lively matchbox.
However, in Taiwan, whether it is spring or autumn and winter, the rainy season sometimes lasts for a whole month without sunlight, and the flat terrace space caused by the staggered floor levels, the architect's ideal "sex" idea is to let students do not have to go down to the classroom when class is over. On the ground, there can also be a game space.
However, what is the real situation? Neither can be used when it is raining, and in summer, students are afraid of heat and will not play on the platform. The construction quality of public works in Taiwan is poor, and the waterproof function is good for ten years. After the waterproof function is broken, the classroom under the platform will be in bad luck. The leakage of water will cause the ceiling to collapse, and it will occasionally fall and hit people bomb.
On vertical façades, architects also like to play with vertical greening. In addition to pleasing the selection committee for extra points, architects seem to regard the function of vertical greening for energy saving as "sex", with the self-deception of a camel burying its head in the sand, knowing that The biggest difference between the public sector and the private sector is funding. After the building is completed, the public sector will not make a budget to maintain the façade. The same design, if placed in a commercial building in the private sector, will look good if you have money to maintain and plant it, but if placed in a public building, it will turn into dead weeds.
These dead weeds cannot be pulled out arbitrarily! If it is still within the manufacturer's warranty period, the agency has to find a way to notify the manufacturer to deal with it. If there is a case of a manufacturer or a manufacturer that has been dropped by 101 and wants to be ruined, you will not be able to call it until you die, and you have to pay the security deposit to deal with it. Dead weeds have to go through the procurement process again.
In short, when these original architects' fantasies based on various purposes of "sex" (wanting to win bids, trying to educate users, wanting green building labels, etc.) become real public buildings, most of them end up tragically.
Taking the public building in the photo as an example, it was completed in less than five years. Except for the vertical greening plants withering 1/3, the rain shelter was made of wood. It was very beautiful when it was first completed, but the material could not stand the humidity and air pollution in Taiwan. The climate is visibly decayed and cracked.
To be honest, these dead, broken things that can be repaired with money are not the biggest nightmare. Usually before repairing, people like me who are very concerned about the environment usually start to "respect". I'm not kidding you, our school even installed the air-conditioning unit on the outer wall of the classroom, and it was ugly by the enthusiastic public. Wow, his family bought the second floor, ah, the school will have to build the first floor. Well, when it comes to this package, I am out of breath and digress. In short, the enthusiasm of the Taiwanese people is beyond your imagination. Let's talk about the deeds of these enthusiastic people another day.
This is actually very helpless. All the functional "sex" fantasies of architects are removed, and the public buildings are built into standard matchboxes, which are ugly, but they are safe and okay, and nothing is a good thing.
Like my work? Don't forget to support and clap, let me know that you are with me on the road of creation. Keep this enthusiasm together!
