11/24 (Thursday)

At 19:49, a high-rise fire broke out in Jixiangyuan Community in Urumqi, Xinjiang. At 22:35, the fire was extinguished by the fire brigade. The fire caused 10 deaths and 9 injuries.

11/25 (Friday)

  • 6:00: The Urumqi Municipal Government issued an announcement reporting the fire situation, confirming that the fire was caused by a fire in a power strip in a resident's home. The statement mentioned that "Jixiangyuan Community is a low-risk area for the new coronavirus epidemic, and residents can go downstairs for activities." Netizens complained that it was a lie, claiming that Jixiangyuan was classified as a high-risk area and residents could not freely enter and exit the unit building, resulting in the inability to escape in time. , coupled with the fact that the fire exit was blocked and could not enter the community in time, it led to the tragedy.
  • 22:00 : An article on WeChat titled "The road is open, but they don't run" , in response to the Urumqi Municipal Government's statement, lists the chat records and community records of the Jixiangyuan Neighborhood Committee in the WeChat group asking residents not to go downstairs. Posts on residents' WeChat Moments pointed out that the door was locked, etc., accusing the government of excessive prevention and control that led to the rapid expansion of the fire and unnecessary casualties. The article quickly spread across the Internet and was removed from the shelves.
Supplement: A follow-up article pointed out that the evidence of this article was insufficient. The unit door of the community was not locked. The door of the community was originally very narrow and it was not blocked because of the epidemic. The audio of the fire video was edited. WeChat The auspicious garden of Qun is not the auspicious garden of Urumqi... and so on. However, it is currently impossible to verify whether the statements of both parties are true or false.
  • Evening : The WeChat video account began to widely circulate a number of short videos of Beijing’s Tiantongyuan community, including residents and neighborhood committees fiercely arguing about the reasons for the closure, and neighborhood committees privately discussing how to use measures to deal with disobedient residents, triggering outrage among netizens.

  • 0:00 : Urumqi City held an emergency press conference to explain the fire. It was mentioned at the meeting that "some residents have weak self-prevention and self-rescue abilities, are not familiar with the location of the second safety exit leading to the roof of the residential building, and did not carry out effective fire prevention measures when the fire broke out." Firefighters and timely escape and self-rescue." He reiterated that Jixiangyuan Community is not a high-risk area, the residents' escape routes are not locked, and the pictures circulated on the Internet are malicious splicing.

11/26 (Saturday)

  • Late night on the 25th to early morning on the 26th (the start and end times are unknown): Protesters began to appear on the streets of Urumqi, Xinjiang, demanding an end to the more than 100-day blockade, and questioning the government's underreporting of the number of fire casualties.

  • 9:30 : The Urumqi People's Government held a press conference to announce that Urumqi has achieved social cleansing and will reopen in stages to restore order in low-risk communities.
  • Evening to early morning : People took to the streets across China to mourn the victims of the Urumqi fire and protest against the nucleic acid testing and dynamic clearance policies. More than a hundred people gathered on Urumqi Road in Shanghai to demand the end of the blockade and freedom of press and freedom of speech. There were even calls for "Xi Jinping to step down" at the scene. The police did not stop the protest at first, but later some protesters were taken away by the police. People in Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Xi'an, Gansu and other places responded.


  • Among Chinese colleges and universities, Nanjing University of Communication took the lead in launching a movement of mourning and protest in the evening. Students spontaneously raised white paper to express silent protest. According to the video leaked at the scene, a school leader pointed out: "You will one day have to pay tribute to you today." Pay the price for everything you do!" Thirty colleges and universities including Sichuan International Studies University, Peking University, Zhejiang Wanli University, and China Academy of Art responded to the "White Paper Movement."


11/27 (Sunday)

  • Shanghai : At noon, people took to the streets in Shanghai to demand the release of those arrested last night. In the afternoon, Shanghai police began to block roads and people were carried away. Plainclothes police officers were mixed in with the crowd. They set up blockades at night and removed street signs on Urumqi Middle Road.

  • Beijing : Students at Tsinghua University gathered in front of the Bauhinia Garden cafeteria on campus to protest, shouting slogans such as "Democracy, rule of law, freedom of expression." Hundreds of students gathered to support the demonstration. Students shouted "Freedom of Speech" and sang "The Internationale". The deputy secretary of the Tsinghua University Party Committee rushed to the scene of the protest and promised to hold a campus-wide discussion. Many communities in Beijing communicated or fought with neighborhood committees on their own and obtained unblocking. The specific number is unknown, but more than 30 are reported online. According to the Twitter account Teacher Li is not your teacher, more than a thousand people gathered in Liangmaqiao, Beijing to mourn the Urumqi incident and chanted the slogan "I want nucleic acid! I want a lockdown."
  • Guangzhou : People in Haizhu District took to the streets to protest and demand the lifting of the lockdown. The Haizhu District government issued a statement in the evening to optimize and adjust social epidemic prevention and control measures from 0:00 on November 28, including precise control of high-risk areas.
  • Chengdu : Crowds gathered at Wangping Street in Chengdu, Sichuan Province in the evening. Among the slogans they chanted were: "We want human rights," "No life tenure," "Oppose dictatorship," "Freedom of speech," and "Give me freedom or give you death." wait. The video shows that the crowd may be in the thousands, and the word "Chengdu" appears on an advertising banner on the street.
