Let "English Grammar" understand better: de-verbization-gerund/infinitive/present participle/past participle (one)

Only one verb can appear in a single sentence in English, other words with the meaning of action must be " de-verbified " so that they are no longer verbs

The de-verbified word becomes the following four forms , which appear after the real verb:

(gerund V-ing) : example being.. , doing.. , eating.. , dancing..

(infinitive to + original V) : eg to be.. , to do.. , to eat.. , to dance..

(present participle V-ing) : e.g. being.. , doing.. , eating.. , dancing..

(past participle V-en) : eg been.. , done.. , eaten.. , danced..

Next, let's take a look at what sentence patterns are formed after the above four types are followed by real verbs?

Sentence pattern 1 : real verb + (gerund V-ing) as object

※ She enjoys being with him . He likes being with him.

※ I cannot imagine living like that .

Sentence pattern 2 : real verb + (infinitive to + original V) as object

※ They want to better control the situation .

※ The old Johnny finally decided to take his first vaccine .

Sentence pattern 3 : real verb + (gerund V-ing) / (infinitive to + original V) as object

※ Most of people like traveling in summer .

※ Most of people like to travel in summer .

Sentence pattern 4 : real verb + (infinitive to + original V) as object complement

※ The war teaches us to count on ourselves .

※ The doomsaying urges people to give up hope .

Sentence pattern 5 : real verb + (present participle V-ing) as object complement

※ We watched the plot growing worse .

※ That family first smelled fire burning all around .

Sentence pattern 6 : real verb + (past participle V-en) as object complement

※ We saw him completely crushed after that game.

※ Social isolation makes us locked at home .
