Topic: Before or after the moment on July 1, 1997, that changed the fate of Hong Kong for the next fifty years, how much did we know about this place and Hong Kong people? If you look at the writings on the history of Hong Kong, most of them were not written by Hong Kong people. There are writings about the British colonial view of history, and there are discussions about the Chinese people serving Chinese nationalism. In their writings, Hong Kong people are just a group of passive cooperation and blurred faces. Xu Chengen, who considers himself an amateur Hong Kong studies scholar, wrote "Hong Kong, a Depressed Home State: A History of Hong Kong's Origins from Local Perspectives" in order to counter the mainstream historical view of the absence of Hong Kong people and to establish the historical status of the Hong Kong nation.
