The Daping Coal Mine in Sangzi Town, Xinhua County, Loudi, Hunan Province, was closed due to policy in 2014, but the poisonous water of the coal mine still flows throughout the year, and eventually all flows into Zijiang: The heavy metals exceed the standard: 776 times iron and 73 times manganese.

In addition, it is shocking that the perennial drinking water of 300 villagers in the vicinity exceeds the iron limit by up to 7 times! Water quality experts warn that such drinking water is no longer suitable for human consumption.

Since 2008, more than 2,000 coal mines have been shut down in Hunan, which is the province with the most important problems left over from the history of small coal mines in the country.
