[Today in the History of Feminism] February 2, 2018: Zhao Ao Ao reported Peking University professor Xie Can for sexual harassment

On February 2, 2018, reporter Zhao Aoao published an article on the WeChat account of the women's rights platform "Orange Umbrella", "When a kiss was placed on my neck, I realized that I was sexually harassed by a professor... ". She said that the sexual harassment reported by Beihang professor Chen Xiaowu on January 1 reminded her of her own experience.

In July, the #MeToo movement heated up in mainland China, and Zhao Aao's "friend + colleague" reposted an old article on Phoenix.com on July 26 to support the #MeToo movement. However, the title of the article has been changed to "About Peking University Professor Xie Can: When a fierce female reporter encountered sexual harassment, why did she fail to resist", the editor also clearly pointed out at the end that the professor in the article was Xie Can of Peking University School of Life Sciences .

According to Zhao Aoao in the article, when she interviewed him in Xie Can's office, Xie Can once took her hand and stroked her to "relax" and even kissed her neck later. Zhao Aoao told the editor about the incident. They were very angry. They sent an email to warn Xie Can, and if they harassed again, they would notify the school.

However, nearly a year later, Zhao Aoao received a request from Xie Can to re-add him as a friend on WeChat, with a postscript saying "I miss you". Zhao Aoao warned Xie Can not to harass her any more and put him on the blacklist. She also revealed in the article that she kept various evidences such as WeChat, text messages, and call records communicated between the two parties, and would investigate whether any of Xie Can's students had also been harassed.

On August 6, Zhao Aoao published "[Begging for a Hammer] One of the Evidences of the Sexual Harassment of a Female Reporter by Xie Can of Peking University" through the WeChat public account "Walking Night Road Singer", and published a large number of screenshots of chat records, telling the story The ins and outs of her sexual harassment by Xie Can also showed how Xie Can verbally harassed her for a long time on WeChat. Zhao Aoao also quoted Xie Can's anonymous student as saying that Xie Can was "a repeat offender" in the school laboratory. This content was later removed.

On August 7, Xie Can made a public response, saying that "her accusations against me are inconsistent with the facts, and I have never sexually harassed her." On the day after the article "About" was posted online, I sent a letter to the relevant departments of Peking University, requesting the school to initiate a serious investigation and verification of the relevant facts. I believe that those who are clear will clear themselves."

Xie Can also said that the meeting in the office was the third time the two met. Since the other party took the initiative to contact him to interview him, he was the one who was "originated" and "does not have the objective conditions for usually sexual harassment." However, Xie Can did not specify whether the physical contact described in the report had occurred, nor did he deny the chat records posted by the whistleblower. In addition, Xie Can also hinted at the real name of the female party and encouraged the female party to report in real name.

On September 13, Zhao Aoao published the article "Returning from Peking University, Sleepless All Night" on the WeChat public account "Walking Night Road Singer", saying that she had submitted her real ID card information to the Peking University Teachers' Professional Ethics and Disciplinary Committee Office for a report. , and went to Peking University for an interview on the afternoon of September 12 at the request of the school. As a result, the school was forced to sign a letter of guarantee, promising not to record or disclose the content of the conversation.

However, this text that did not have a lot of information increments was deleted on the WeChat platform, and the WeChat public account was later banned. On the 13th, some people reposted the article to the Weiming BBS of Peking University, but the post was also deleted that night.

On October 30, Zhao Aoao republished "Return from Peking University, Sleepless All Night" on Matters, and revealed that before the school interviewed her, "A Peking University girl who had been victimized many times also reported her tutor Xie Can to the school. Sexual harassment against her”, but “the girl was kicked out of the laboratory’s WeChat group by Xie Can almost instantly.”

On December 22, @赵嗷嗷本AO once again sighed on Weibo that regarding reporting Xie Can’s sexual harassment, even though he was “fortunate enough to keep a lot of evidence of screenshots and conversations”, he also won the trust of the teachers of the investigation team of Peking University. The school of Peking University still "will not deal with it"; "because their system needs more direct evidence - the video on the spot (I'm not posing for a video) or Xie Can stop sophistry and honestly admit it (visually impossible)."
