What is Web3.0? Has a new Internet generation arrived?

Recently, the discussion about Web 3.0 has become more and more high, and many technology-related articles are related to it. Many people say that Web 3.0 is coming, maybe in 2022. What is Web 3.0? Why is it so worth discussing? And is this really the trend of the future?

What is Web3.0

Web3.0 is a new generation network with blockchain as the main axis. Unlike other generations, Web3.0 uses technologies such as cryptocurrency , NFT and blockchain to create the relationship between users and the Internet. The biggest feature of Web3.0 is decentralization. Users no longer rely on any company or organization to use the Internet, and the central organization cannot provide any one-sided services, so that the exploitation of the intermediary layer disappears and achieves both privacy, An open, trusted Internet. To understand Web3.0, we must first understand the evolution of Web1.0 and Web2.0.

Web1.0 (1991~2004)

Web 1.0 was the stage when the Internet began to be widely used between 1990 and 2004. At that time, everyone was still using Window2000, Windows XP and other operating systems to access the Internet, and most users could only query information. No comments or interactions, just like a library or millions of read-only archives, only developers can provide information to users.

Web2.0 (2005-present)

Most of us are in the era of Web 2.0. Unlike the previous Internet generation, Web 2.0 provides more interactivity between users. Most people do not need to be developers. Life is shared with people all over the world, and many social platforms and apps have been created for users to communicate and create with each other, such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, etc. In addition, the invention of smart phones has deepened The frequency of community interaction.

However, some problems have arisen from the recent development of online communities, that is, community platforms are becoming more and more commercialized, interactions between users are becoming more and more business-oriented, and platforms are also using internal databases and algorithms to understand users The appearance and preferences of the Internet users began to broadcast a bunch of advertisements, which made the privacy issues of users and other centralized organizations more and more able to control users and other issues to come to the surface, so the topic of Web3.0 began to ferment.

Web3.0 (2010~)

As mentioned above, the problem of Web2.0, Web3.0 is the main feature of decentralization, the platform is jointly governed by everyone and does not belong to anyone, and the data is stored in various corners in a decentralized manner, and no organization can grasp it. The transaction currency used is the virtual currency issued by the decentralized organization. In addition, Web3.0 also has four attributes, namely, Semantic web, artificial intelligence, and 3D graphics. ) and ubiquitous (Ubiquitous), the above four elements sound very jerky. Simply put, it means that in the future, not only developers and computers communicate with each other, but computers and computers communicate with each other to handle some basic things to increase efficiency. And by artificial intelligence to analyze the data, filter and provide the most suitable information to meet the needs of users. Then create a three-dimensional network world, allowing users to interact with people in the metaverse world with 3D virtual avatars, coupled with the popularization of 5G, everything is connected to the Internet, forming a future three-dimensional virtual space with artificial intelligence and ubiquitous Internet.

The relationship between Web3.0 and blockchain and cryptocurrency

Web3.0 is a network that operates under a decentralized protocol, so it relies heavily on concepts such as cryptocurrency and blockchain to achieve decentralization. For example, Web3.0 requires a cryptocurrency reward mechanism to give users the motivation to continue to create , To operate a decentralized organization, the technology requires the distributed ledger of the blockchain to allow users to protect their data and not be censored and controlled by any organization. NFT has become the proof of the assetization of user data, and it can also allow the ownership of personal data to return to the user and not be monopolized by the platform. Therefore, recently emerging concepts such as blockchain, cryptocurrency, and NFT are closely related to Web3.0, and they are all elements that build the appearance of Web3.0.

What are the characteristics of Web3.0?

  • Decentralization: As mentioned above, due to the network that Web3.0 operates under a decentralized protocol, all data is stored in a decentralized manner, which helps to get rid of any centralized platforms such as Dependence and control of Facebook and Google.
  • Permissionless, Trustless (Permissionless, Trustless): Web3.0 uses open source software, which means that all code is open to everyone, allowing users to participate without going through a trusted platform or obeying the norms of any regulatory agency.
  • Artificial intelligence, machine learning (AI, Macing learning): In the Web3.0 generation, AI will also be widely used to enable computers to understand information like humans, imitate human learning ability, and improve problems autonomously.
  • Mutual communication, ubiquity (Connectivity, Ubiquity): Computers and computers will communicate with each other to handle basic affairs, greatly increasing efficiency. In addition, 5G and the Internet will make the network ubiquitous.

Is Web 3.0 the future trend?

Web 3.0 sounds ethereal and incomprehensible. Is this the future trend? Of course, some people have raised doubts. For example, Tesla founder Elon Musk tweeted, "Has anyone seen Web3? I can't find it no matter how I look for it", implying that Web3.0 is actually just a marketing gimmick. Special founder Jack Dorsey also said that although Web 3.0 itself is decentralized, the owners behind it are still those venture capital companies, and the essence is still selling dog meat in sheep's clothing.

And the innovation of Web3 will also bring the following problems:

  • Regulation and legality: Due to the characteristics of Web3.0, blockchain, and cryptocurrencies, the government is very troubled, and many countries are currently in a fuzzy state, but if the government thinks it is illegal, this will severely impact the development of Web3 .
  • Cybercrime: The anonymity of technology makes cybercrime such as money laundering rampant and difficult to trace on Web3, which is one of the reasons for the headaches for the government.
  • Fake news and hate production: As in the previous point, anonymity makes speech more free, but on the contrary, it has to bear the price of fake news and hate speech.

in conclusion

Although Web 3.0 is not sure whether it is just a marketing gimmick, and there may be a lot of problems with it, there are many different technologies that are already happening now. For example, blockchain has been adopted by many enterprises to improve efficiency, and cryptocurrencies have also made this happen. Generations of currencies are more cross-border, the invention of NFT allows creators to have more capital to continue creating, 5G has begun, and the AI Internet of Things is slowly taking shape. All these are closely linked with Web3.0. On a train heading for the future, although it is not sure whether the next stop is Web3.0, and whether that stop is beautiful, the scenery along the way seems to be prompting the same direction.
