DAO: Generate electricity with love, work with bitterness?

In 2018, I found a few friends and proposed a case for a g0v citizen technology grant. At that time, it was the first time I encountered the problem of "distributing money": how should the funds be allocated?

I dare not say whether the allocation decision I made at that time was reasonable - or that there was no "reasonable" at all. After all, salary is not productivity, but bargaining power . Just try your best to make everyone satisfied.

Then for an organization, the most important thing is to be able to complete the goal or keep going, and the allocation of resources is to serve such goals.

A treasure trove of Matters study clubs

Matters Lab Discord will broadcast live online learning sessions every Friday morning at 11:00 UTC+8, and the videos are only available for Travelogger holders to watch on YouTube (discord certification and form are required). These learning session videos should be the latest in recent times. An often overlooked treasure trove.

The theme of the three recent learning sessions is DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization), which is an organizational form that uses tokens to govern in Web3.

My earliest view of DAO is: "The rise of Web3, including the re-exploration of the collaborative model in the form of DAO, is actually to pursue other more important (humanistic) values." ( source )

1. The Governance Conundrum of DAOs: Voting, Governance, and Decision Making by Ricky Wang ( Slides / YouTube )

In these emerging DAO governance models, although there are many new terms, it is not difficult to understand that their concepts are derived from the experience of traditional organizations (joint-stock companies, cooperatives, etc.) or democratic systems. For example, "governance tokens" are similar to shares with voting rights; "pledge lock-up tokens" for a period of time are similar to locked shares; the reputation system is to carry trust in people.

It may be difficult to have an "best institutional solution" here, just as there will be no governance method suitable for every company, and governance disputes (similar to the corporate school vs the market school) are inevitable. Institutions are designed to serve the different governance goals of each different organization.

2. Be a core contributor at DAO by Shawn ( Slides / YouTube )

This is one of my most recommended sessions, and Shawn presents a lot of close-up observations and real-world data. Shawn made it clear (27:50) that most DAOs in 2020 are "generating electricity with love", and this year (2022), GitCoin and Bankless DAO will survey 422 DAO contributors, of which 40% of the contributors said DAO Already the main source of income, but most people's income comes from multiple DAOs. The report is quite interesting and can be read here: The Ultimate DAO Report

3. Talking about the three DAO business models by Erica ( Slides / YouTube )

Regarding Erica, there is a previous interview worth watching: Erica's sharing at the Mirror Chinese Community Conference

In this study session, Erica shared many DAO analysis, hands-on practice and subjective insights, which may take the most time to digest... .

impression

At present, many emerging DAOs are the evolution of Web3 self-organization. However, like most startups in the early days, many people come based on enthusiasm, but they may not guarantee the return of sufficient value in the end, no matter in the form of money. , the right to speak, and even a sense of honor.

Matters is a limited liability company, and the communities and people surrounding the Matters.news main site, Matters Lab Discord, and The Space project, either recruited or spontaneously organized, activate the entire ecosystem. In the name of DAO, how to take these dynamism to the next stage?

As a software developer who has personally experienced the rise (and harvest) of the Apple ecosystem, I deeply understand that a truly healthy ecosystem cannot just coexist and prosper, but also needs to have enough power checks and balances, otherwise we will only face Web2 again The dilemma of the era of giant monopoly.

Web3 DAO is an organizational model that takes openness as the principle and takes the distribution of governance power and interests seriously. We don’t need to be too naive and optimistic, as long as we can move forward together.

The journey will be the reward.
