Thoughts on "A Cup of Coffee Storytelling Club"

What drives me to hold storytelling sessions? Two years ago, I accidentally discovered...

A Cup of Coffee Storytelling Club was successfully completed on September 18th!

What will the story tell me?

Thanks to the Jao Tsung-I Cultural Center , Timeless Cafe and Treasure Island for their support and assistance. When I first proposed the idea of starting a story-telling club, I was deeply encouraged by the active interest and support shown by people even though they did not fully understand the concept.

I chose " The Power of Subtraction " as the theme book for this storytelling session. This book has changed some ways in my life and work, and provided me with a method of solving problems that I had ignored in the past. This method can change our quality of life and work efficiency. I hope to share it with more people.

A total of 15 people attended the story-telling event that day. The owner of the Cafe happily told me that the atmosphere of the event was quite good. After communicating with the participants, they said they gained a lot and that various reminders were very helpful to their lives and work. For me as a storyteller, these positive feedbacks are undoubtedly the greatest encouragement.

Although there are book clubs and sharing sessions for authors’ new books in Hong Kong, storytelling clubs are rare. Almost all of these 15 participants said that they had never participated in a story-telling conference and this was their first time. They all expressed that they loved this new experience of "listening to books" and learning.

Some people think that Hong Kong is a cultural desert and lacks a reading culture. People do not love reading. I dare not completely deny this view. But I believe we have the potential to change this situation. At least we can try to stop this process of "desertification". I realize that many people do not dislike reading, but they have not yet experienced the joy of reading, and have not yet understood the true meaning and method of reading. Once they try and experience the joy of reading, they will definitely fall in love with it.

During the story-telling meeting, a gentleman said to me: "I hope you can teach us how to read and how to read a book next time." This is exactly the original intention of holding a story-telling meeting. At that moment, I immediately thought, should I share the classic " How to Read a Book " at the next storytelling meeting?

During this storytelling session, I saw that there are many small oases in Hong Kong waiting to grow; I saw that there are people who are eager to read more books; I saw that there are people who are looking forward to enjoying the sweetness that reading brings. These are the sources of motivation for me to decide to continue holding book clubs.

What drives me to hold storytelling sessions?

Two years ago, I accidentally discovered a Taiwanese storytelling podcast called " What to Read Next?" ", ignited my passion for reading. In just two years, I purchased nearly 100 books and personally experienced the profound impact of reading on my life, work, and even life.

Through this podcast, I gradually understood that real learning is not just the input of knowledge, but also the output of knowledge. Learning through teaching and sharing what you have learned is also an important part of learning. Therefore, I set up a self-study blog website " Everyone is Born with Knowledge " and began to share personal learning and life details.

Last year, I realized the importance of note-taking and a personal knowledge management system (PKM) for independent learning after a book called " Card Box Notes " sparked heated discussions among creative and academic circles. They are like our " second brain ". In order to supplement my knowledge in this area, I read many books on related topics.

There is a famous saying in the Bible: "Faith without works is dead." The same is true for reading without actions. At that time, I was looking for a digital note-taking system that suited me on the Internet. Initially I tried Logseq, but found that it was not suitable for me, so I switched to Obsidian. After using it for a while, I felt that Obsidian was not intuitive and did not meet my needs. Finally, I chose the paid Heptabase . With this "sharp tool", reading and learning become more interesting, and research becomes more enjoyable. This tool not only improves learning efficiency, but more importantly, it greatly improves the quality of my learning and enables deep learning.

One day, I noticed Fan Deng, a famous storyteller from Mainland China, on the Internet. Listening to his storytelling and understanding his entrepreneurial story, I think storytelling can be a meaningful and valuable activity. It not only helps promote reading culture, but also stimulates people's desire for knowledge, thereby improving the public's knowledge level and contributing to social progress. From then on, I came up with the idea of starting a storytelling club.

I hope to share my reading experience with the public more broadly and deeply. I look forward to allowing more people to experience the fun and changes brought by reading through the storytelling club.

Preview of the next storytelling session: October 16 (Monday) 3:30-5:00 pm
