Block World | Don't wait until the moment before disappearing to backup

It was only last November that I learned that there was a special reward program called "ISCN Rock Festival" launched by LikeCoin Grants , a joint venture of the civic republic Liker.Land and the decentralized content platform Matters, with the aim of promoting cultural conservation programs.

I applied for the project plan of "Content Metadata Registration and Curation The Amplifier". The plan is to select Studio Incendo 's news photos about Hong Kong social movements on flickr, add comprehensive report content and some information that EXIF will not provide, and then register with ISCN and Arweave and upload them to the blockchain for permanent storage.

Demonstration examples must be provided during the application. At that time, the content of the comprehensive report can be sorted out, and the news report materials of "Stand News" and "Zhongxin" can also be used. But by the time the application was approved, both online news outlets were forced to cease operations.

It took me less than a month to select 380 of the more than 7,000 photos. The photos document the news from the June 2019 parade to the closure of Apple Daily in June 2021.

The most difficult part of organizing this batch of photos is not finding relevant reports and organizing content, but that some photos are difficult to identify where the photos were taken. At this time, you need to rely on the experience of photojournalists, and then use the real-world map of Google Maps to confirm the location of the photo.

When I was working on this news photo conservation project, I sometimes felt dull and unmotivated because of the many repetitive processes. But when I think that one day these photos and reports might disappear, I encourage myself to keep working hard.

Affirm that you are doing something worthwhile and meaningful.

Cultural and historical preservation are preventive work, don't wait until they are about to disappear before doing backup work. "Apple", "Stand", "News" and Hong Kong and Taiwan programs have given us enough homework. At present, it is possible to put precious data, pictures and videos on the blockchain for permanent storage. We must use them well to do a good job in conservation.

I don't have an IT technical background, so I don't know how to register 380 pieces of data and photos to the blockchain in one go. I am grateful to @黄牛山人who wrote " How to Register "Three Hundred Poems of Tang Poems" in one breath for his help, saving a lot of time.

The "Studio Incendo Flickr Album Decentralized Storage Project" has come to an end. After some technical issues are dealt with, we will share the results with you. The initial plan is to build a web page and continue related work.
